HFZ Capital Groupunveiled The XI’s West Tower Penthouses, envisioned by renowned French interior architect Pierre Yovanovitch. In line with the visionary spirit that gave rise to The XI, for the first time ever, Pierre Yovanovitch brings his artistry to residential condominiums. The result is nine unprecedented Penthouses, each a singular work of art. Bjarke Ingels Group’s condominiums at The XI are making that particular ideal a reality, enlisting French interior designer Pierre Yovanovitch to craft interiors for the property’s nine just-unveiled penthouses.

In 2016, a warped pyramid of a residential tower entered the New York City skyline. With VIA, located in Manhattan on West 57th at the Hudson River, AD100 architect Bjarke Ingels made his first residential mark on the city. Now his second, also with a twisted design, is under construction in Chelsea: the XI a travertine-and-bronze-clad two-tower complex, one 36 stories tall, the other 26 stories tall, that will also include the first United States Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas. At a topping off preview in March, visitors marveled over the stunning views from floor 36, the top of the tallest tower. Now, this and the four floors below are being shaped into nine similarly fabulous penthouses, courtesy of another AD100 designer, Pierre Yovanovitch.

Take the XI, for example, a pair of towers under construction in Chelsea that resemble a dancing couple, flirtatiously twisting toward each other as they soar skyward; the design maximizes square footage without compromising views. HFZ’s Ziel Feldman, the project’s developer, recalls meeting Ingels for lunch to discuss it; by the end of the meal, the architect had sketched an initial concept on a napkin. “He’s not egotistical, and he has almost superhuman energy,” Feldman explains. “And he will design from the inside out, not the outside in. He doesn’t make buildings that are beautiful architecturally that you can’t live in.”

In New York, Architecture at Large has done interiors for the Baccarat store on Madison Avenue, Asia de Cuba on Lafayette Street and others. Its current projects include HFZ Capital’s high-profile rent-to-condo conversion of the Belnord on the Upper West Side, where the firm designed the public spaces and one model unit. It also designed the retail space OHWOW at Andre Balazs’ Standard Spa in Miami Beach.
Construction Update: The XI

Facade installation is ongoing at the west tower of HFZ Capital Group's The XI, a mixed use development at 76 11th Avenue. Designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the development consists of two twisting towers atop an 85 foot podium adjacent to the High Line. The 36-story west tower rises 400 feet and will consist of residential units and supporting amenities. A 26-story east tower will offer a mixture of residential units on the upper floors and a Six Senses hotel on the lower floors.

One of the most noticeable construction projects along the High Line, the 36- and 26-story reinforced concrete towers, which topped out in March, will soon be home to condominiums and a 137-room Six Senses Hotel Resorts Spas, the first location in the United States. Eighty-seven of the residential units will be designed by Gilles & Boissier, while 136 will be designed by Gabellini Sheppard. Prices will range from $2,575,000 to $14,500,000.New photos of the larger, 402-foot-tall superstructure show the color and texture of the envelope, which is going to be covered with travertine stone. The warm hues tone down the bright white-colored exterior, which is only the backside to the travertine fitting. Workers are about two-thirds of the way up the western profile, while the shorter, 300-foot-tall counterpart has yet to begin curtain installation.
